Empower Athlete Mentorship Program

My objective To provide young athletes with the guidance, skills, and support necessary to excel not only in their sport but also in life, fostering personal growth and development.

Duration: 12 months (1 hour) call per month with parent present. 

 

Between calls:  Regular feedback and open communication with athletes will help me tailor the program to the individual needs of the athlete and enhance its effectiveness.

 

Monthly fee: $100 (able to cancel at any time)

 

Month 1: Introduction and Goal Setting

 

  • Welcome and program overview

  • Icebreaker and introduction to mentorship dynamics

  • Importance of goal setting and its role in athletic performance, personal growth, and academics pursuits.

  • Teach them the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time bound) goal setting framework.   

  • Homework: Young athletes draft their short-term and long-term goals

 

Month 2: Leadership Skills

 

  • Understanding the essence of leadership in sports and life

  • Identifying leadership traits within oneself

  • Leadership styles and their applications

  • Role of a leader in team dynamics

  • Case studies of successful athlete leaders

  • Homework: Reflect on personal leadership qualities

 

Month 3: Communication Skills on the Field

 

  • Effective communication's impact on team performance

  • Verbal and non-verbal communication strategies

  • Active listening skills

  • Providing constructive feedback. Use role playing exercises to stimulate game situations where communication is crucial.  

  • Handling pressure situations with clear communication

  • Homework: Practice active listening with a teammate

 

Month 4: Conflict Management Skills

 

  • Types of conflicts in sports teams. Help them to understand conflict will arise in a competitive environment and how to approach them positively. 

  • Techniques for resolving conflicts amicably such as addressing issues directly, staying calm and finding win-win situations. 

  • Turning conflicts into opportunities for growth and learning 

  • Real-life examples of conflict resolution in sports

  • Homework: Write a scenario-based conflict resolution plan

  • Building and maintaining healthy relationships with teammates coaches and opponents. 

  • Understanding different personalities and working collaboratively. The impact overall that relationships have on team dynamics. 

  • Empathy and its role in teamwork

  • Trust-building exercises. Role playing scenarios involving building rapport and solving differences with teammates.   

  • Overcoming challenges in interpersonal relationships

  • Homework: Reflect on a valuable lesson learned from a teammate

 

Month 6: Mental Health and Mental Toughness

 

  • Importance of mental health in sports performance

  • Strategies for managing stress and anxiety

  • Building mental resilience and toughness

  • Visualization and positive self-talk techniques

  • Recognizing signs of burnout and seeking help

  • Homework: Develop a personalized mental preparation routine

 

Month 7: Work Ethic

 

  • Defining work ethic and its connection to success

  • Time management strategies for student-athletes

  • Balancing academics and athletics effectively

  • Setting high standards and consistently meeting them

  • Inspiring stories of athletes with exceptional work ethics

  • Homework: Create a weekly schedule that balances training, academics, and rest

 

Month 8: Prioritization and Learning to Focus

 

  • Identifying priorities and setting task-related goals

  • Techniques for maintaining focus during practice and competition

  • Overcoming distractions and staying in the present moment

  • Mindfulness exercises and concentration techniques

  • Goal-oriented time management

  • Homework: Share a situation where improved focus led to better results 

 

Month 9-12: Review and Integration

 

  • Monthly check-ins on progress and challenges faced

  • Refining and adjusting goals based on evolving needs

  • Continuation of skill-building in leadership, communication, conflict resolution, etc.

  • Reflecting on lessons learned and personal growth

  • Gradual transition to self-directed growth beyond the mentorship period

 

Program Conclusion:

 

  • Final assessment of goals achieved

  • Celebration of progress and growth

  • Certificate of completion for young athletes

  • Encouragement to maintain the skills learned and continue personal development
